International Mother Language Day is celebrated across the globe on this day every year to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism.

Theme of the Day this year is fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society to support multilingualism and the use of mother tongues, both at school and in everyday life. This year, special attention is being paid to multilingual education from early childhood so that mother tongue should always be an asset for the children.

According to the United Nations, every two weeks a language disappears taking with it an entire cultural and intellectual heritage. Promotion of mother tongues is essential, because learning process is hindered when 40 percent of the world’s inhabitants do not have access to education in the language they speak or understand the best.

UNESCO believes education, based on the first language or mother tongue, must begin from the early years as early childhood care and education is the foundation of learning.
