Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem has passed away at the age of 79, state media reported.

According to reports, Al-Muallem was also the deputy prime minister of Syria. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates mourns the death of Minister of Foreign Affairs Walid al-Moallem,” said state news agency.

He was first appointed foreign minister in 2006. Born in 1941, al-Muallem served as Syria’s ambassador to the United States from 1990 to 1999.

However, no cause of death has been provided yet.

Recently, Al-Muallem seen last week during a conference the Syrian regime hosted to discuss the return of million Syrian refugees.
