ISLAMABAD: South Korean tech giant Samsung looks forward to building a smartphone assembly plant in Pakistan, Industry and Production Minister Hammad Azhar declared on Friday.
The remarks from the federal minister came after he met with MD and CEO of Samsung Pakistan.
“Pakistan’s smartphone production is increasing following the introduction of Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS), and the recent launch of Mobile Policy,” Azhar said in a tweet.
He added that both the Samsung Pakistan MD and CEO appreciate the policies of the government and are now seriously considering the establishment of a smartphone assembly plant in Pakistan.
In June, the Federal Cabinet approved the country’s first mobile device manufacturing policy, prepared by the Engineering Development Board (EDB), a Ministry of Industry and Production (MoIP) techno-economic arm, through comprehensive consultation with key stakeholders in the public and private sectors.
The program seeks to enable local assemblers to provide work, qualified, and semi-skilled trained youth to local engineers. Pakistan is well-positioned to capitalize on the comparative advantage of human resources to draw investment from around the globe in the sector. The strategy is aimed at gradual localization/indigenization of the cell phone pieces.
