A giant cargo ship stuck in Egypt’s Suez Canal, the world’s main trade route due to strong winds at night on Thursday.
Taiwan’s MV Evergreen was seen standing obliquely in the Suez Canal, disrupting naval access to the canal, prompting efforts to evacuate the ship.
The shipping company Evergreen Marine Corp. told media that the container was “accidentally stopped by a gust of wind.”
The company management further said, “The company has asked the ship owner to report the cause of the incident and the company is in talks with the concerned parties, including the management of the canal, to expedite the ship as soon as possible.”
The Suez Canal, which connects the two seas, the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, is one of the world’s major trade routes, providing 10 percent of the world’s maritime trade.
