Due to power struggles, economic excesses, poor strategy and incompetent leadership, East Pakistan Separated from Pakistan on 16th December 1971.
In the 1970 elections, Sheikh Mujibur Rehman’s Awami League emerged as the majority party but was deprived of power.
The vandalism and siege began, The situation reached the point where rebel officers and soldiers of the East Bengal Regiment and East Pakistan Rifles formed the separatist organization, which was fully supported by India.
To control the tensions in the eastern part of the country, the Pakistan Army launched Operation Search Light on March 25, 1971, during which Indian arms and ammunition for the insurgents began arriving in Dhaka.
In early December 1971, India occupied several important Pakistani territories from the frontier dunes and battlefield. India launched a full-scale attack on Dhaka Airport between the nights of December 3rd and 4th.
Indian intervention, lack of military equipment and lack of responsible leadership engulfed East Pakistan. Thus, on December 16, 1971, Pakistan broke up and the new country became Bangladesh.
A Mahmood-ur-Rehman Commission was set up to investigate the December 16 tragedy, but a full report has not been released.
