Every year, the world celebrates International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11. This year, the world is celebrating the 6th International Day of Women and Girls in Science Assembly on today Thursday.

The celebrations this year will address the theme “Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19”.

The event will be held at the United Nations Headquarters via video conferencing. The event will focus on the role of women who were at the frontline during the world’s fight against COVID-19.

An important part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, gender equality and science are two aspects that will be discussed during the event.

As per UNESCO data, due to gender biases and lack of representation, women are often unable to steer their way in the science and technology sector. 2015 Gender Bias Without Borders study by the Geena Davis Institute indicated that of the onscreen characters with an identifiable STEM job, only 12 per cent were women.

To boost the involvement of women and to eradicate the biases that shroud the industry, it is important to address these issues and actively take steps to promote the participation of women
