Palestine Liberation Organization Secretary-General and Chief Negotiator for Palestinians in the Middle East Peace Process, Dr. Saeb Erekat has passed away after a protracted illness.
He was 65 and suffering from coronavirus complications for the last one month.
Saeb Erekat has led successive Palestinian negotiations with Israel for decades, including talks that led to the signing of the 1993 and 1995 Oslo Accords.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep sadness over the death of Dr Saeb Erekat.
In a statement, he said Erekat was dedicated to the peaceful pursuit of justice, dignity and legitimate rights of Palestinians to self-determination, sovereignty and statehood.
The UN Chief reiterated the world body’s commitment to support all efforts to bring the parties together to achieve a long-awaited, just and sustainable two-state solution.
