KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shallwani has inaugurated the 2nd Street Library at Liyari’s famous place Baloch Chowk, located in chakiwara, on the occasion of independence day of Pakistan.
The first Street Library was established at Commissioner’s corner inaugurated by the Chief Secretary Mumtaz Ali Shah on Dec 25, 2019. It was the initiative of Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shallwani who established the first-ever library in Karachi as commissioner Karachi.
The establishment of the Street Library was first of its kind in the country and was admired by book lovers from all over country. They expressed their admiration through social media. The national and international media also recognized the initiative through exemplary media coverage
Commissioner on the occasion of the inauguration of the 2nd street library thanked the DMC south for supporting the idea of taking steps to set up the library in Liyari.
He hoped that the DMC would keep supporting by providing assistance to look after the street library. Commissioner said the people of the library were recognized as book lovers and many people live in Liyari belong to art literature and reading is their passion.
He hoped that the library would help them get easily the books of their choice. Almost All kinds of books including history, fiction, poetry general knowledge football, and other sports and professional knowledge would be managed to provide the readers, he added, Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shallwani said that the setting up of street library was his idea he thought reading habits was prime need of our society. He further said that it would promote reading habits among people and easy access to the books they wanted.
Commissioner said that steps were being taken to set up libraries in other parts of the city. In North nazimabad, he already had laid down the stone laying of the structure of the library and hopefully would be constructed in the next few months, he added. Malir and Garden would also have soon seen the work to start for setting up the street libraries, he said.
He highlighted the importance of books in the present internet era said Google was not the substitute of books, as Google provides only the information while the books give the knowledge and wisdom and enlighten the human mind.
The Chairman of the DMC south Malik Fayaz appreciated the idea and hoped the street library in Liyari would provide the youth of the district an opportunity to access the books easily and promote reading habits among them.
